GRE quantitative section is comprised almost entirely of concepts taught in high school mathematics. ETS divides these concepts into four broad content areas, namely arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. This is the second part of a comprehensive guide covering these four areas:

II. ALGEBRA

  1. Factoring Algebraic Expressions: Factoring is the process of breaking an expression into two or more factors. Besides being tested per se, elementary techniques for factoring are essential for saving time in solving quadratic equations and inequalities.
  2. Solving Linear & Quadratic Equations/Inequalities: Linear equations/inequalities have degree one (degree is the value of highest exponent on the variable(s) occurring in an equation /inequality). Graphs of linear expressions are straight lines, hence the name. Quadratic equations/inequalities have degree two. Solving is the process of finding values of the variable(s) occurring in an equation/inequality that satisfy that equation/inequality.
  3. Solving Simultaneous Equations/Inequalities: Solutions of simultaneous equations/inequalities simultaneously satisfy both equations/inequalities.
  4. Mathematical Modeling: Setting up equations to solve word problems is an essential tool to ace the GRE quant.
  5. Functions & Symbols: Interpretation of functions, relations and specially defined operations is tested.
  6. Operations with Exponents: Algebraic manipulation involving variable exponents occurring in equations and inequalities is tested.
  7. Coordinate Geometry: This branch of geometry includes graphs of functions, equations and inequalities. It also includes intercepts and slopes of lines.
